How to Test 911 Correctly

Periodically testing 911 is the best common practice to ensure that you and your employees have access to emergency help in the event that it is needed. Over time, programming changes, line cancellations, etc… can cause 911 to not work properly. While we at E.C.S. always test 911 when installing a new system, unforeseen events can lead to the inability to dial 911.

Correct 911 Testing Procedure

  • Contact your PSAP (Public Safety Answer Point – Business Number) to find out what their procedure is for testing 911 in your area.
  • Once you have this information, you then need to test both 911 and 9+911.
  • For Businesses: Test from any office phone connected to your Telephone System
  • For Hotels:
  • Test from any guestroom phone (from a room that is checked in and also checked out)
  • Test from any office phone connected to your Telephone System
  • Test from any general area phone
  • Should 911 and/or 9+911 dialing not work, please notify E.C.S. immediately.
